Formerly Blackwell Vale, Riverwell Beck was renamed in June 2022 to celebrate its extensive refurbishment project, GOOD CQC rating and next chapter under the management of Mariposa Care.

Situated a short drive from Carlisle city, Riverwell Beck provides nursing care for people living with complex medical needs, as well as 24-hour nursing dementia care provided by specialist teams. We also provide residential care for those who need a little help with daily tasks, and residential dementia care, where we support residents to maintain their independence and individuality, encouraging social activity and building relationships within the home.

Our home is only a short distance from Upperby Park, which makes for a lovely day out for residents and their loved ones to spend quality time together. At Riverwell Beck our residents love to explore and enjoy our beautiful sensory gardens, which we have found to be most beneficial to their well-being.

Daily Life

Life at Riverwell Beck is again dictated by our service users. It is a relaxed family feel with lots of activities. We are very much part of the community and involve ourselves with whatever is happening out there within the community such as going to see the weeping window at the castle. Intergenerational programmes where our service users have become pen-friends with children from our local youth zone and joining them in the community for a fifties night etc. We have themed days such as Burns Night, St Patricks Day, St Davids day and St Georges day where we have entertainment to suit the cullture of the day and the menus for those days would be traditional Scottish, Irish, Welsh or English. We have flower arranging, exercise to music, pantomimes, music halls and the usual bingo and quizzes etc along with gardening groups, knitting groups, cooking groups and pamper groups. Whatever is decided by our service users.

Dining

Food is cooked fresh on the premises and the menus are dictated by our residents who discuss regularly the menu options at their involvement meetings. These are fed back to our Chef who accommodates the service users wishes and adapts the menus to suit. The dining rooms are spacious, warm and inviting and give our service users another opportunity for get together mealtime chats. Riverwell Beck take nutrition very seriously, offer a wide varied, colourful and tasty diet but one that is tasty and nutritionally sound.

Testimonials

Mum is known by name by all staff, at whatever level, that she comes into contact with. [...] She has taken on a new glow since living in the home as her daily needs are taken care of with love and compassion. As for her family, our relief is palpable in that we no longer have to worry about her medication, eating, washing, clothing and socialising. The home not only cares for Mum but us too.

S F (Daughter in Law of Resident)

The staff who work at Riverwell Beck are all amazing. They have patience, kindness and respect and nothing is too much trouble. They look after my Mum,[...] with gentleness and understanding and I know that she is safe and cared for all the time - knowledge that allows me to relax. I really could not ask for more from the staff at the home [...] and am grateful to them for all that they do.

Jane T (Daughter of Resident)

Riverwell Beck has been a revelation. [...] It is light and airy, impeccably clean with pleasant, individual bedrooms, comfortable communal sitting rooms and dining rooms. The food is very good but the best thing of all is the staff. All are efficient, friendly, always ready to explain and help. My husband has been here for a year now. He has dementia and continues to deteriorate. My only consolation in my grief is the knowledge he is being cared for as well as is humanly possible.

Mary G (Wife of Resident)

Our Wellbeing Coordinators had the pleasure of meeting a group of veterans at Carlisle United’s Veteran meet up. The conversation was extremely insightful and we look forward to welcoming the group to meet our resident veterans soon.

On the back of this we have created a new questionnaire which is available in the reception area that helps us better understand any veterans in our care. Please feel free to take one/ask for one for your loved one and hand back into reception when completed.

Huge thank you to Myley Tours for taking us on our first trip on the tour bus. We visited Watchtree Nature Reserve where we were made to feel very welcome by the staff!

They made our trip extra special by allowing us to fill up some bird feeders and enjoy a tour of the gardens. The cake and coffee was a treat too 😉

You can read more about our work with Myley on our blog post here: mariposacare.com/latest-news/mariposa-care-introduces-myley-care-home-tours-to-boost-resident-enr...

For this month's Veterans' Coffee Morning we had a WW1 memorabilia box on loan from the The Devil's Porridge Museum!

This sparked memories of a time long gone but stories that are still very much alive for our residents.
